In short
- We count visits as daily totals: how many people came, which pages they opened, and how far a lesson got.
- We do not ask for a name or an email. There is no cookie, no account and no lasting identifier.
- Reading progress stays in your own browser. Like any website, our hosting provider receives each page request.
What we count
Each day we count how many people visited and where they came from. We count which pages they opened and how far into a lesson they got. We also count which questions were missed on the first try, and which lessons were finished. Visits through a school's own link are counted under that school's name.
To count each visitor once a day, we make a scrambled code from the internet address and browser description. The code is deleted when the day ends. So we cannot tell whether yesterday's reader is today's reader, and we have chosen not to know.
What we never keep
The site never asks for a name or an email. It sets no cookie and has no accounts or device ids. Our counts do not store your internet address or your browser's description. With nothing to sign up for, there is no profile of you to keep.
Where progress lives
When a child finishes a lesson, the book remembers it in the browser on that device. If they came through a school's link, the browser also remembers the school's name. Clear the browser's data and both are gone. We do not receive the progress record itself, only the counts above.
Who else is involved
Our hosting provider serves the pages and runs our counter. With each request, it receives the device's internet address (IP address) and a description of the browser. It keeps its own logs of these requests, and we do not control how long. We use no analytics company, no advertising network and no social plug-in. We do not sell our totals or share them with advertisers.
Children
Coursebook is made for children of about 9 to 13. This page is written for their parents and teachers. A child can use every lesson without telling us who they are. There is no chat, no upload and no place to post.
Changes
This page may change as Coursebook grows. The date at the top shows the last change. If what we count changes, we will update this page before the new counting starts.
